Snail farming first appeared in Greece 40 years ago, but it started growing in the last 20 years. Progress in this field is deemed necessary, as the native snail populations have already become extinct in some areas.
Intense interest has developed over the last years in Greece to expand snail farming. Greece is particularly benefited by the climatic conditions, a fact that places it at an advantageous position with regard to investing in snail farming. At the same time, the increased demand for snails in the European Union member states has created the conditions that guarantee the sale of the snails produced.
Snail farming requires know-how with regard to the snails’ biological cycle and physiology, while the farm facilities themselves have to satisfy specific technical standards.
