The activities of Kelyfos Farm include:
- reproducing, breeding and selling Helix Aspersa (Muller) and Helix Aspersa Maxima snails;
- providing support and consulting services to snail farming units under construction;
- constructing new, ready-to-operate snail farming units from scratch.
The Kelyfos Farm snail reproduction and breeding unit is made up of closed chambers, occupying a total area of 6,200 sq.m. This is separated into two independent snail reproduction and fattening units.
The snail reproduction and breeding processes take place under completely monitored health conditions, with constant supervision of the products and protection from herbicides and chemical fertilizers. The snails produced are fed with special rations which contain certified ingredients for fodder. The chambers are equipped with a wet fogger system that creates the necessary reproduction and living conditions for snails.
Snail breeding is a field of farming; therefore, the health regulations that generally apply for primary sectors, and especially the requirements for food of animal origin, have to be satisfied.
For this reason, Kelyfos Farm:
- has adopted practices and measures ensuring that the food and the food sources are produced under the appropriate health conditions;
- has implemented measures against risks to the environment (inspection of unwanted substances, harmful organisms, illnesses and contamination);
- has adopted appropriate production, handling, storing and transport methods.
Kelyfos Farm works closely with:
- a specialized agronomist, who is responsible for soil processing and soil improvement;
- a veterinarian, who monitors the farm to maintain the ideal environment so as to avoid diseases.
The soil has to be sterilized to avoid the spreading of diseases. For this reason, snail testing and soil analysis take place regularly to detect possible salmonella, parasites, heavy metals, and so on.
The Kelyfos Farm facilities are located in Greece.
